Breed Spotlight: Siamese Cats

Some people are dog people. Some people are cat people. Some people don’t have to choose! Wherever your heart lies, if you like cats, then you know they come in many varieties.

One of the oldest, most well known, and popular breeds is the Siamese cat.

Their distinctive point pattern is a natural mutation.  The original seal point has given rise to other colourations, including chocolate, blue, and lilac point. The Siamese itself has also been the progenitor to many other breeds, such as the Oriental, Tonkinese, Balinese, Havana Brown, and the Himalayan cat.

Siamese are smart, sturdy cats that can have a tendency to suffer from anxiety disorders such as separation anxiety. Although they can be friendly and playful, they do best in a calm environment and are best suited to a family of seasoned cat owners with no young children.

One of the main reasons someone may choose cats over dogs is the difference in the amount of time that they are able to invest in their pet. A cat likes attention, but can be left at home for comparatively longer periods and does not need to be walked. They do, however, need a litter box – cleaned daily.

Vet visits are essential in keeping your cat healthy. Like many breeds of cat, Siamese cats can be genetically predisposed to a variety of health concerns, including progressive retinal atrophy leading to progressive blindness over time, mediastinal lymphoma, asthma, and systemic amyloidosis.

The Siamese, like many cats, may not like going in the car!

Getting your precious kitty to the vet may be somewhat of a chore. Make that trip to the vet easier with a call to the professionals at
